Picking the right Kona diving company is easily the most critical choice you'll make for your Big Island scuba adventure. It's the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. The best dive shops don't just get you in the water; they blend an ironclad safety record with genuine local know-how and a real commitment to your comfort.

When you're looking for a top-tier Kona diving experience, you're really looking for a partner you can trust. Here at Kona Honu Divers, we've spent years earning that trust, and it all boils down to a few core things we refuse to compromise on.
The Kona Honu Divers Difference
First, and most importantly, is safety. It's not just a buzzword for us. We have a flawless 100% safety record, backed by a crew with over 200 years of combined professional diving experience. This isn't just a job for our team; it's a passion, and keeping you safe is always priority number one.
Next up is the quality of your time with us, both on the boat and below the surface. Our dive boats, Honu One and Honu Iki, aren't just repurposed fishing vessels. They were custom-built from the hull up specifically for divers. That means more space, more stability, and features designed to make your trip smooth and comfortable.
Finally, you can't beat local knowledge. Our crew lives and breathes these waters. They know the dive sites like the back of their hand—from the famous Manta Heaven to the hidden gems most people miss. That insider expertise is what turns a standard dive into a truly special experience. We cover more on this topic in our guide on what to look for when choosing a Kona diving company.
To put it all in one place, here’s a quick summary of what sets Kona Honu Divers apart.

Experience Kona’s Unforgettable Signature Dives
While Kona is packed with incredible dive sites, there are two experiences that are truly world-famous. These are the bucket-list adventures that people travel across the globe for. As a top Kona diving company, we’ve built our reputation on guiding divers through these underwater ballets, making sure every trip is as safe as it is magical.

The World-Famous Manta Ray Night Dive
Picture this: you settle onto the sandy ocean floor as the sun goes down. You switch on your light, and out of the darkness, graceful giants emerge to feed. This is the Kona Manta Ray Night Dive, an encounter so reliable it’s become one of the most celebrated wildlife experiences in the diving world. It's unique to Kona and has an incredible 92% success rate for seeing mantas. You can find more insights on this dive from experts at Divers Alert Network (DAN).
We’ve learned that the key to a great experience is the location. That’s why we exclusively take our divers to Garden Eel Cove, the superior choice for this dive. It's a site naturally shielded from ocean swells, which means calmer, safer conditions and a much better viewing area for everyone. Here, we set up our signature "manta campfire"—a circle of lights that draws in plankton, which in turn attracts the mantas.
This setup gives you a front-row seat to the show. You get to watch comfortably from a stationary spot as these majestic creatures glide and barrel-roll just inches above you. As an added bonus, the surrounding reefs at Garden Eel Cove are healthier, making the entire manta ray dive tour that much more beautiful.
The manta dive is an absolute must-do. While some snorkelers also share the water, we've found that the best encounters happen while diving. If you'd like to learn more about the experience from the surface, check out our guide on how to snorkel with manta rays.
The Mysterious Pelagic Blackwater Dive
Ready for something completely different? For our more adventurous and experienced divers, we offer a thrilling trip into the abyss: the Pelagic Blackwater Dive. Forget the reef. On this dive, we motor out over deep ocean water, drop a downline with powerful lights, and wait for the planet's largest migration to rise up from the depths.
Every single night, a universe of strange and wonderful creatures migrates toward the surface to feed. You’ll float in the dark, safely tethered to the line, and come face-to-face with alien-like squid, glowing jellies, and the larval forms of fish that look nothing like their adult selves.
It’s often described as a spacewalk, and for good reason. You’re exploring a hidden world of bioluminescent life that few people ever get to witness. Our expert guides are there every step of the way to make this exhilarating dive both safe and absolutely mind-blowing. Beyond Kona's unique offerings, you can explore a world of other exciting diving and snorkeling experiences.
Our Dives: Something for Every Diver
Here in Kona, we know that every diver is on their own unique journey. That’s why we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to exploring the underwater world. We’ve put a lot of thought into crafting trips that match your specific experience and comfort level.
So whether you’re just getting your feet wet with something like a Discover Scuba Diving program or you're a seasoned diver with hundreds of logbook entries, we have an adventure waiting for you.
Morning and Afternoon 2-Tank Dives
Our most popular charters, by far, are the Morning and Afternoon 2-Tank Dives. Think of these as the classic Kona experience. We take you out to two incredible, distinct reef sites where you can truly appreciate the magic of the Big Island.
You'll spend your time gliding over ancient underwater lava arches and exploring vibrant coral gardens. It’s on these dives you’re most likely to have those unforgettable encounters with Hawaiian green sea turtles, eels, and massive schools of colorful reef fish. We always pick the best spots based on the day's conditions, ensuring a safe and spectacular trip for every certified diver on board.
Premium Advanced Dives for the Adventurous
Ready to take things up a notch? For certified divers looking for a bigger challenge, our Premium Advanced Dives are the real deal. These trips go beyond the usual dive sites, heading to more remote and complex locations that most divers never get to see. You can learn more on our advanced dive tour page.
We’re talking dramatic deep-water drop-offs, stunning lava tubes, and a much better chance of spotting larger pelagic animals passing through.
These charters are specifically for experienced divers who are confident with deeper profiles and can handle more challenging conditions. It’s your chance to see a wilder, more untouched side of Kona.
Because these trips are longer, we can venture further out to those pristine sites. It's an incredible way to push your boundaries and add some serious excitement to your logbook.
No matter which trip you choose, we’re all about giving you the best possible experience and value. That’s why we offer free Nitrox on all our boats for any diver with a Nitrox certification. It’s a simple perk that means more bottom time and less time waiting on the surface. We have a whole range of Kona diving packages designed to help you make the most of your time with us.
Safety & Expertise: The Foundation of Every Dive

When you're out on the water, choosing a Kona diving company means putting your trust in their crew and their equipment. We get that. Here at Kona Honu Divers, that trust is everything to us, and we earn it by building every single one of our trips on a solid foundation of safety and real-world expertise.
It all starts with our crew. We’ve brought together a team of dedicated professionals with a staggering 200+ years of combined professional diving experience. These are not just guides; they are seasoned experts who live and breathe diving. Their passion is matched only by their commitment to your well-being, which has helped us maintain a perfect, 100% safety record.
What PADI 5-Star IDC Means for You
Our obsession with doing things the right way has earned us the PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Center (IDC) rating. That's more than just a fancy title on the wall. It’s PADI’s highest designation, recognizing that we meet the most stringent standards for safety, education, and professionalism in the dive industry.
Think of it as the gold standard. This rating is your guarantee that we not only train divers but also train the instructors themselves. From our rental gear to our guides, you're getting the best service and instruction available.
When you dive with a PADI 5-Star IDC, you know you’re with a top-tier operator that’s recognized for excellence.
Our Custom-Built Dive Boats
Your comfort and safety on the surface are just as important as your time underwater. That’s why we didn't just buy any boats; we invested in our custom-built dive vessels, the Honu One and Honu Iki. Unlike repurposed boats, ours were designed from the ground up specifically for divers.
What does that mean for your trip?
- A Smoother Ride: Our boats are built for superior stability, which cuts down on rocking and helps keep seasickness at bay.
- Room to Move: You’ll have plenty of space to set up your gear, walk around, and relax between dives without feeling like you're packed in.
- Diver-First Features: We included things that make a real difference, like easy-to-use entry platforms, secure tank holders, and freshwater showers for a post-dive rinse.
These boats aren't an afterthought; they're a key part of making your experience seamless and safe. If you want to see the details, our Kona Honu Divers policies outline the standards we stick to on every trip. Our goal is to handle all the logistics so you can have complete peace of mind and focus on the incredible adventure waiting for you below.
Preparing for Your Kona Dive Adventure

The secret to an incredible day of diving actually starts before you ever step on the boat. A little bit of prep work is the key to a smooth and totally stress-free adventure. As your Kona diving company, we’ve got the big stuff covered—we provide all the high-quality, perfectly maintained dive gear you'll need, plus snacks and drinks to keep you going.
Your only job is to bring your personal gear. We always suggest packing a towel, a dry change of clothes, and some reef-safe sunscreen to protect yourself and our beautiful coral. Our check-in process is a breeze right at our Honokohau Harbor shop, so you'll know exactly what to do when you arrive.
How to Prevent Seasickness
Feeling a little queasy on the water is a common worry, but it absolutely does not have to ruin your day. The best defense against seasickness is a good offense—being proactive before the boat even leaves the dock makes all the difference.
If you know you’re prone to motion sickness, there are some great over-the-counter remedies. Taking one about an hour or two before the trip usually does the trick.
- Patches: A Ship-EEZ Seasickness Patch is a fantastic, non-drowsy option that provides long-lasting relief.
- Pills: You can't go wrong with classics like Dramamine pills or Bonine pills. They're popular for a reason!
- Wristbands: For anyone who prefers a non-medicated approach, Sea Band wristbands use simple acupressure to help keep nausea at bay.
- Natural Remedies: Many of our divers also swear by natural ginger chews.
The key is to take your preferred remedy before you start to feel sick. Waiting until you're already feeling unwell is often too late, so plan ahead for a comfortable and amazing dive.
Scuba diving has become a huge part of Hawaii's tourism, and for good reason. The Kona coast alone now supports over 600,000 dives every single year, which shows just how many people are discovering these underwater wonders. You can actually discover more about Hawaii's dive industry popularity on dedepudive.com. We're committed to making sure every one of those dives is as comfortable and memorable as possible, and that all starts with being well-prepared.
Why Divers Consistently Choose Kona Honu Divers
We can talk all day about our commitment to safety and incredible service, but let's be honest—the real story of a dive company isn't written by us. It's written by the divers who spend their precious vacation time with us, out on the water.

Frequently Asked Questions
We get a lot of great questions from divers planning their trip to Kona. Here are a few of the most common ones we hear, with answers to help you get everything sorted out.
Do I Need To Be Certified To Dive With You?
Not necessarily! If you've never dived before but want to see what all the fuss is about, our Discover Scuba Diving experience is perfect for you. Our instructors will cover the essentials and then guide you on a beautiful, shallow reef dive. No certification or prior experience is needed.
For our other boat charters, like the famous manta night dive or our advanced trips, you will need to have an open-water scuba certification. If you're looking to get certified, we offer a full range of PADI courses right here to get your underwater adventure started!
What Is Your Cancellation Policy?
We have a 48-hour cancellation policy for our regular dive tours. Life happens, we get it. Just be sure to let us know at least 48 hours before your trip is scheduled to depart, and we’ll issue a full refund.
Cancellations made inside that 48-hour window and no-shows, unfortunately, can't be refunded. This policy is what allows us to manage our boat space and crew schedules. Keep in mind that private charters have their own 7-day cancellation policy. We always suggest getting travel insurance just in case your plans change unexpectedly.
Why Is The Garden Eel Cove Manta Dive Better?
We're often asked this, and for us, the answer is clear. Garden Eel Cove is the superior choice and consistently provides a better manta ray night dive experience. For one, the site is naturally tucked away from the open ocean, which means calmer waters, a much more comfortable dive with less surge, and a better viewing area.
Our crew sets up a "campfire of light" on the seafloor, which draws in plankton and attracts the mantas right over your head for breathtakingly close encounters. The reef itself is also healthier and more vibrant than other sites. When you combine that with our crew's expert knowledge of the area, you get the safest and most spectacular manta ray dive tour possible.
What If I Get Seasick Easily?
Don't let a little motion sickness ruin your adventure! While our custom-built boats are incredibly stable and our captains are pros at finding the calmest spots, prevention is always the best medicine.
The most effective strategy is to take preventative measures 1-2 hours before your trip. Being proactive is the best way to ensure you feel great.
We've seen it all, and these are the remedies that work best for our guests:
- Over-the-counter options like Dramamine pills or Bonine pills are very effective.
- Many divers swear by the Ship-EEZ Seasickness Patch.
- For drug-free alternatives, try Sea Band wristbands or some simple ginger chews.
