Scuba Diving Hawaii Pictures
One reason why divers love Kona diving is the world famous Manta Ray night dive. The mantas are amazing creatures that put on a great show. The manta ray dive is possibly the most popular dive in the world! The mants ray dive is definitely a bucket list checking kind of experience. Imagine giant flying alien creatures that kind of resemble dolmations the fly and loop de loop through the water coming within inches of your head! Each mant can range from 6-12 feet wide and over 1200lbs! We can see anywhere between 1 to over 20 mantas in one night. The mantas give us a show because we help them feed with our bright lights which attract the plankton in the water to us. If you haven’t tried it yet, book a manta ray night dive with us. Scuba diving Hawaii is like nowhere else.
Another reason people love scuba diving Hawaii and specifically Kona Diving is the Blackwater dive. This dive takes you far off-shore at night. Because Hawaii island is a giant mountain the steep slopes allow us to find deep water quickly. At about 2.5 miles offshore we will be in 3000ft (1000m) of water. This means it’s the perfect spot to view the largest migration of animals in the world and it happens every night! Six divers dangle from lines tethered to our boat the Honu Lele. As you float there animals will drift up and around you. There are so many strange creatures. Sometimes we will find new species never described by science! Most people would not know what they are even looking at. Much of what drifts by is a larval or baby form of a larger animal. You might see baby flatfish or larger blue water species like Ono or pufferfish. Often squid will come through because they are attracted to our lights. Dolphins may come hunting for the squid. You can often hear the dolphins but occasionally you will see them. These are not the friendly playful dolphins you might see during the day. They are the big bad apex predator dolphins you will see at night. Zipping and maneuvering at lightening speed. Often times the black water dive is really tame with mostly smaller plankton-like critters, but occasionally you will see sharks. While not common we have come accross blue, silky, whale, pygmy, and even cookie-cutter sharks!
Even the typical night dive can be so good. Oftentimes you will see fish sleeping and other fish hunting. Night dives are good for seeing crustaceans. You will see lots of shrimp, squid, snails, lobster and others out at night. The same reef will seem much different at night. It’s a great change of pace from doing lots of day diving and for the serious diver it’s a must. Scuba diving Big Island has such variety and night reef dives are just one of the few dives available here.
Scuba diving Hawaii is more than just spectacular night dives though. The day time diving is what makes Kona diving worthwhile. The diving here is so good because we have excellent visibility. This means during the day you can typically see anywhere from 40 – 80 feet or more. The reefs here are loaded with life. Sometimes you have to poke around a bit to find it but it’s there! Eels and octopus are common sightings here on the Big Island. Kona diving is also great for the large critters you can see. We will often see spotted eagle rays, dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and sometimes even whale sharks or whales! Probably the best thing about Kona diving is the variety of diving and things to see.
There are lots of great things about Kona diving specifically that make it stand out from diving other parts of the world. Firstly scuba diving Hawaii is one of the better places in the Pacific because Hawaii has so much more to offer than just diving. We have so much to see and do here on the Big Island of Hawaii. There are the volcano and Mauna Kea observatories that are unique in the world. Other than exploring on land there is the variety of hard corals underwater. On of the most interesting things about scuba diving Big Island is the lava formations that make for so many caves, caverns, arches, walls and canyons to explore. The terrain can be quite varied and makes for lots of critter hunting possibilities. As for critters we often see octopus and eels on most of our dives. There are schools of butterfly and surgeonfish and sometimes eagle rays or turtles. There’s so much to see you have to dive to encounter all of the potential critters!
